Pharmaceutical, Electrical or Biological? That is the Question!

Pharmaceutical, Electrical or Biological, that is the question?

You see, I said it would be a bit intermittent, me posting on here. The truth is that I’ve been trying to keep several plates all spinning at once while in the throes of one of the worst FMS flare-ups I’ve had in ages.

Which leads me to the question posed at the beginning of this article. What’s the best pain relief for when these horrendous flare-ups occur?

I tend to approach pain relief in three different ways. These being.

1.       Painkilling medicine

2.       TENS machine

3.       CBD

They all have their pros and cons of course. The painkiller I am currently using is Tramadol, which while effective in the short term is not great for the long term as I find the awful constipation it eventually brings to be on a par with the fibro in discomfort. But on those especially bad days, I have no qualms about taking it purely out of desperation. I also have amitriptyline at nighttime which, again, is good at what it does but leaves me unable to function properly until midday. I’m as groggy as the proverbial drunken sailor.

The TENS machine is probably my favourite form of pain relief and the brilliant little machine I purchased from Amazon 7 years ago has been as trustworthy a companion as my own dear wife. It’s a superb way, personally, of dealing with pain and I have been known to have it on for up to four hours at a time and occasionally even longer. If there is a drawback with the TENS its that the pads don’t last all that long and you must be so very careful where you attach them. If you get too close to a bone then you’re in trouble and it feels like you’re being tattooed by the Marquis de Sade.

Then there are the CBD products, and what a vast variety of them there are now. The gummies are ok but I find it’s definitely a case of you get what you pay for where they’re concerned. You do need to spend a fair amount of cash to get the really good ones. I’ve also tried CBD shots and liquids which, while tasting utterly foul, do get to work quickly. The best CBD product I have found is Holland & Barretts’ CBD Muscle Balm Extra. This is a powerful ointment which is very soothing and if there is a drawback it’s probably that if I use it in conjunction with the TENS then the pads are rendered useless afterwards.

So, personally, I find a three-pronged attack against the pain, using all three methods alternatively. That way my bowels keep regular, my bones aren’t electrocuted and my skin gets nicely moisturised while my muscles are soothed at the same time.

Let me know your own techniques for pain relief in the comments section.

See you soon x

Welcome!

Is it absurd? Is it inane? No, it’s Fibroman! Been wanting to do this for about two years now but haven’t had the physical or mental wherewithal to do so. But then, that’s fibromyalgia for you. I had the vision, for want of a better word, for The Adventures of Fibroman in 2023 and even created the logo way back then. Of course, I had to go and lie in a darkened room for two hours afterwards but that’s by the by. Let’s just say, I’m finally at a place where I can begin. So, who exactly is this mysterious Fibroman. Well, it’s me, Alan Stevenson, writer, novelist and true FMS sufferer. Sorry if you were expecting this to be a thrilling new superhero series but the truth is the only superpower I possess is the ability to write intriguing prose and pithy dialogue. I’ve managed to write seven novels since 2019, I honestly don’t know how because there have been huge gaps of weeks, months and even years between writing bouts, but what annoys me the most is that the pre-FMS me wou...
